Sunflowers

Sunflowers

I’m growing some this year and I’ve grown them before and I always loved when you pass a very large field of them. It seems that they can go on forever.

Each one, while looking similar, has an individual face or personality and if you look closely, one is not quite like the other that is right next to it. Sounds similar to people, doesn’t it? Sunflowers, people so much the same but each of us with our own unique differences. When we look at sunflowers we seems to focus on the uniformity but with people we seem to focus on our differences, why is that?

I recently found out that sunflowers were adopted by the women’s suffragette movement of the late 19th Century in America. They adopted sunflowers as a unifying symbol to help organize women for the right to vote. I took them about 50 years of fighting to final succeed. August 26, 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, which allows women the right to vote.

I planted sunflowers this year by happenstance and not knowing the connection to the 19th Amendment. I’m glad I decided to do it, each of them the same, each of them the different.
